PUTRAJAYA, Feb 2 – The government will take legal action against any quarters trying to revive the banned Al-Arqam movement or spreading religious teachings that contradict Islam.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said the Malaysia Islamic Development Department and the respective state Islamic religious councils would continue to monitor such activities, including that of the Obedient Wives Club (OWC) whose programme recently was foiled by the Perak religious authority.

The programme was said to be aimed at tackling sex issues in society by linking it to the Prophet, drawing condemnation from various quarters.

Jamil Khir said attempts to revive teachings that were unIslamic would be exposed to the public so that they would be on guard and which would also signal to the groups involved that their deviant movement was being watched.

“If they (OWC) don’t do it anymore, we cannot accuse them. But what we are seeing is that the setting up of OWC is as though they are trying to revive the Al-Arqam movement,” he said.

Earlier, Jamil Khir launched the Baitulmal Zakat (Tithe) Aid Scheme Application Process Guidebook produced by the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP), stating in detail how an application is handled by the MAIWP Baitulmal from the beginning until it is approved.

He said it was hoped that the guidebook, to be distributed to Muslims soon, could help correct negative public perception of the zakat application procedures implemented by MAIWP Baitulmal.

He added that MAIWP would be developing a data information system containing detailed information on each zakat aid applicant in an effort to avoid anomalies and to ensure that only those eligible would receive zakat.
